The franchise begins with a meeting at a celebration in Atlanta: Fatima, a nonprofit director, and David, a corporate attorney, find each other at exactly the wrong moment. That meeting sets the tone for everything after it — attraction tangled with ambition, loyalty tested by opportunity, and people who love each other deciding what they are willing to hide.
From there the story widens across a city and its industries: a marketing agency, a luxury boutique, a community foundation, a law practice and the homes where the people who run them go back to at night. Each novel follows a different pair, and each leaves marks on the ones after.
The tone is prestige drama rather than romance alone: restrained, observant, and interested in what people do after they have already decided.
Interconnected by design
The books are not a series of sequels so much as one long story told from different rooms. A supporting character in one novel is the protagonist of another.
Consequences are the plot
Nobody in this world gets away with a choice. The drama comes from watching people live with what they decided, not from the decision itself.
